A better life for vulnerable children

NPH Ireland is one of 22 NPH offices worldwide. NPH Ireland is dedicated to supporting people with disabilities in Haiti, but together the NPH offices work to raise 3,200 vulnerable boys and girls in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. An additional 2,300 children who live outside the homes receive scholarships, meals and healthcare.

In Ireland we run fundraising and volunteer programmes. Read more about ways to help or donate now.

NPH’s values

  • Create a family for life for our children, through unconditional love, shared responsibility and helping others.
  • Provide physical, emotional and spiritual support on a long-term basis to disadvantaged children.
  • Enable children to grow into caring and productive members of their communities.
  • Help our supporters create change and improve the lives of vulnerable children.
  • Ensure a quality education culminating in trade school or a university degree.
  • Offer our children a sense of purpose and pride through taking part in our programme and giving back to their brothers and sisters.
  • Give donors a chance to visit our centres and meet the children whose lives they have changed.

A history of care for children

On a hot summer day in 1954, a young boy entered a church in Cuernavaca, Mexico. His name was Carlos, and his hunger drove him to steal money from the collection box. Carlos was arrested and due to receive a harsh sentence for his crime. The newly ordained priest of the church, Father William B. Wasson, asked the court to show mercy. He asked the judge for custody of Carlos so that he could feed him, clothe him, and provide a home for him. The judge accepted. In fact, the judge continued to send boys to Father Wasson. By the end of the year, 32 boys were in his care and Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”) was born.

A safe, loving family for children

NPH offers vulnerable children a way out of poverty. We give children healthcare, an education and nutritious food. Most importantly, they receive unconditional love. Wherever possible NPH programmes support children in their own homes, with their own families. If that is not possible, they may join the NPH family in one of our homes. Read more about what we do.

More fundraising offices to support NPH children

Since NPH was set up in 1954, we have been expanding our network and now work in 22 countries. At the core of our mission is childcare expertise in 9 Latin American countries: Bolivia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru.

Throughout our network we raise resources to support NPH’s work with children and do awareness raising.

Most of our financial support currently comes from Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the USA.

Family centres in 9 countries

Thanks to the financial support from NPH Ireland, the NPH family has continued to grow, too. Through our partnership we have rescued and raised more than 20,000 boys and girls throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Today, NPH works in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. Read more about our work.

Children’s growing needs

The needs are much greater than they were in 1954. Issues of poverty, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, and generally unhealthy and dangerous conditions in Latin American countries make our work more important than ever. 13.4 million children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. This year in Guatemala alone, this epidemic will orphan over 32,000 children. About 1 million children are exploited annually in the multi-billion-dollar sex industry. Approximately 246 million children are engaged in exploitative child labour. 75% of them are in hazardous environments. 40 million orphaned and abandoned children live in extreme poverty in Latin America alone.

You can help

Our work is vital. Together we can save lives. Please join NPH Ireland. Help us end the vicious cycle of poverty and abandonment by giving love, a family and a future to children in Latin America and the Caribbean. Contact NPH Ireland to find out how you can join the NPH family.
